Revolutionary War–dated manuscript DS, signed by prominent patriots “T. Johnson,” “Dan Carroll,” and “J. H. Stone,” one page both sides, 7 x 3.5, March 1, 1781. Pay order issued to John H. Stone, Esq., for "three hundred Pounds… on acct. of his salary.” Signed at the conclusion by Johnson, and signed on the reverse by Stone and Carroll. In very good to fine condition, with several vertical folds, and some small edge chips. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.
Founding Father Daniel Carroll (1730-96) was one of only five men to sign both the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution. His cousin, Charles Carroll, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Johnson (1732-1819) was a Delegate to the Continental Congress, the First Governor of Maryland, and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. His tenure on the Supreme Court was the shortest in US history. The Manuscript Society notes that Johnson’s signature is among the rarest of all US Supreme Court Justices. John Hoskins Stone (1750–1804) was a Rev. War Colonel, Governor of Maryland, and brother of Thomas Stone, Signer of the Declaration of Independence.
