Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Hampshire (1714–1803). Manuscript DS, signed “Mathew Thornton,” one page, 7.75 x 10.75, June 22, 1762. Legal document concerning the disposition of "the Estate of Mary Anderson late of Londonderry. In part: "In consideration of the of the sum of Three Thousand five hundred & ninety four pound old tenor to me in hand before the Delivery hereof paid by William Rankin of Londonderry in the Province of New Hampshire…the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge…by these Presents do give grant bargain sell aliene convey & confirm unto Him the said William Rankin…three several tracts of Land situate in Londonderry aforesaid being part of the late homestead estate of the said deceased." Signed at the conclusion in ink by James Cochran and countersigned by Matthew Thornton as a witness; also endorsed below by Thornton: "The above named James Cochran acknowledged the above Instrument by him signed to be his free act & deed, Before Mathew Thornton, Justice of the Peace." In very good condition, with light toning and partial splits to folds. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.
