Description

Lawyer, merchant, and statesman from Boston (1725–1788) who represented Massachusetts in the First and Second Continental Congresses, but was voted out when he opposed independence; he was later was elected as the state's first lieutenant governor in 1780. Revolutionary War-dated partly-printed DS, signed “T. Cushing, Ind. Prob.,” one page, 7.5 x 12.5, February 20, 1778. Letter of guardianship, in part: "Know all Men by these Presents, That I Rebecca Dudley a Minor above fourteen Years of Age, Daughter of Thomas Dudley Esqr. late of Roxbury…Have Named, Ordained and Made, and by these Presents, Do put and constitute Coll. Joseph Williams Esqr. if Roxbury to be my Guardian, with full Power and Authority for me in my Name and to my Use, to Ask, Demand, Sue for, Recover, Receive, and take into his Possession and Custody all and singular such Part and Portion of Estate…of my Honored Father above named." Endorsed in the lower margin by Cushing, certifying that "The above nmed minor personally appeared before me, & Acknowledged this Instrument or Letter of Guardianship to be her free act of deed." In fine condition, with a few small repairs to fold splits. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.
