Description

Revolutionary War-dated document signed by a president of the Continental Congress and the engrosser of the Declaration of Independence

Revolutionary War-dated partly-printed DS, one page, 8.25 x 13.25, September 12, 1780. As president of Pennsylvania, Joseph Reed approves a license for the marriage of “Richard Steer of the Town of Northampton in the County of Northampton Batchelor and Benina Cooper of the same Place Spinster.” Signed prominently in the left margin in ink, “Jos. Reed, President,” and countersigned below by Timothy Matlack. The upper left-hand corner retains the original paper seal. In very good to fine condition, with some light toning, and scattered small stains. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.

Joseph Reed (1741-1785) was a president of the Continental Congress and signer of the Articles of Confederation who also served as Washington's aide-de-camp during the Revolutionary War. Timothy Matlack (1736–1829) was a political leader from Pennsylvania best known for engrossing the Declaration of Independence on parchment.
