Scarce Revolutionary War-dated engraved colonial South Carolina bank note for "Twenty Pounds," 5.75 x 4.5, signed in ink by Thomas Lynch, Sr. ("Tho. Lynch"), Henry Middleton ("Henry Mid[dle]ton"), and two others. In good condition, with light staining, and complete separation with some paper loss along the intersecting folds, affecting Middleton's signature. Encapsulated by Beckett Authentication Services.
Thomas Lynch, Sr. (1727–1776) was a planter and statesman from South Carolina who was a delegate to the Stamp Act Congress of 1765 and the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1776, signing the 1774 Continental Association; his son, Thomas Lynch, Jr., succeeded him in the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence. Henry Middleton (1717–1784) was a planter and public official from South Carolina who served as the second president of the Continental Congress; his tenure of five days was the shortest of all presidents.
