Description

Beautiful participant diploma from the Stockholm 1912 Olympics, issued to an American athlete who won two gold medals at the Swedish Games

Official Swedish-language participation diploma issued to American athlete Charles Reidpath at the Stockholm 1912 Olympics. Printed by Centraltryckeriet in Stockholm, this marvelous diploma, 11 x 18.25, designed by Professor Olle Hjortzberg, features beautiful rendering of the goddess Pallas Athene holding a staff and the Greek symbol of victory above a legend with text: “V. Olympiaden, Olympiska Spelen i Stockholm 1912, Meritdiplem, for Lopning [running] 200 meter till C. D. Reidpath, Forenta Staterna.” Matted to an overall size of 14.5 x 22. In fine condition, with a stain to the diploma, and wear and spotting to the mat.

Although he didn’t place in the 200-meter race, American Charles Reidpath won two gold medals at the 1912 Stockholm Games, in the 400-meter and the 4 x 400-meter relay. Reidpath set a world record time in the 400 with a run of 48.2 seconds and, running the anchor leg of the 4 × 400, Reidpath helped the U.S. team set a world record of 3:16.6. He placed fifth in the 200-meter competition.
