Civil War–era hand-addressed mailing envelope, 5.5 x 3, addressed by Robert E. Lee to "Miss Mildred C. Lee, Care of Dr. Smedes, St. Mary's, Raleigh, North Carolina." The envelope bears two affixed five-cent 'Confederate States' postage stamps depicting the rebel nation's president Jefferson Davis. In very good to fine condition, with the upper right stamps clipped off, and minor paper loss to the bottom edge. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.
Robert E. Lee's youngest child, Mildred Childe Lee, was attending Saint Mary's School in Raleigh, North Carolina, when the Civil War broke out. Episcopal clergyman Bennett Smedes was rector at the boarding school for girls.
