ALS signed “Jas. Monroe,” one page, 6.5 x 2.25, no date. Partial handwritten letter by Monroe, in part: "18 months, for wh. I will join my brother in a forthcoming bond to be given immediately. If you approve this you will give an order to the sheriff to this effect." Matted and framed with an engraved portrait and two stamp blocks to an overall size of 14.25 x 13; the frame's backing bears an affixed Goodspeed's Book Shop label. In very good condition, with creasing, staining, and areas of paper loss, none of which affect Monroe's bold signature.
