Description

American statesman (1752–1816) and signer of the Constitution from Pennsylvania who authored several sections of that document, including the well-known preamble. ALS signed “Gouv. Morris,” one page, 8 x 9.75, November 18, 1818. Handwritten letter to Jonathan Dayton, in part: "It would give me pleasure to gratify your wishes but it is not in my Power. I am the Reverse of a monied man; for the Improvements of this Place and of three others make my Expenditures exceed considerably my Income to which must be added $7000 which I was obliged to pay last winter for having had the good nature to put my name on a note of Mr. Church. Living, as I do, very much out of the world I cannot tell you what door to knock at: but I was told sometime last Summer, and the Intelligence was recently confirmed, that altho mercantile men find it difficult to raise money (by Reason of serious Doubts as to the Solidity of mercantile operations for the last two or three years) there who can offer the security of unincumbered real estate was the city of New York maybe readily accommodated." In fine condition, with an old tape stain to the left edge. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.
