Important South Carolina statesman (1724–1792) who served in the Continental Congress. ALS, one page, 8 x 10, February 17, 1792. Handwritten letter to Samuel Johnston in Philadelphia, in part: "I duly received your very polite & obliging favor of the 30th August. I delayed replying, from hopes of receiving an Account from my friend in London of Payments which I had made…The 14th October he advises of a second application that a day was appointed when they were to deliver him the Accounts since that time I have heard no more, indeed it is the latest we have from London. We daily expect vessels from thence, my friend is a diligent Man & I am persuaded he will not neglect my business—business, I have informed him, in which my reputation is involved." He continues to discuss various business matters, noting: "The subsequent sums paid to James Laurens, my Brother not Son, are quite new to me, & gives the Account a different appearance in my view." Addressed on the reverse in Laurens's hand. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.
