Hand-addressed and free-franked mailing envelope panel, measuring 9.75 x 8 unfolded, addressed in the hand of President Thomas Jefferson to “Littleton W. Tazewell, esq., Norfolk,” and franked in the upper left, “Free, Th: Jefferson, Pr. US.” Postmarked at Washington, D.C., on February 27 [1807]. The upper right corner is stamped “Free.” In very good to fine condition, with some light staining and creasing. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder. A scarce and desirable fully hand-addressed free frank from one of America’s most storied founding fathers.
Littleton Waller Tazewell served as a Virginia lawyer, plantation owner, and devout Jeffersonian Republican (1774–1860) who served as a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, and the 26th Governor of Virginia, as well as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates.
