Partly-printed DS as governor, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 12 x 16.25, April 14, 1868. As Governor of Ohio, Hayes appoints William Barnard as a "Justice of the Peace, for the Township of Windsor in the County of Ashtabula." Signed neatly at the conclusion by Rutherford B. Hayes. Lower left bears the original off-white seal. Archivally double-matted and framed with two plaques and a portrait to an overall size of 27.5 x 22.5. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, and light wrinkling and creasing. A decidedly early document from Hayes's second month as the Governor of Ohio; he'd serve a second, much shorter term as governor from January 10, 1876 until March 2, 1877, before heading to the White House as the nation's 19th president. Hayes is one of seven presidents to call the state of Ohio home.
