Uncommon ‘Competitor’ badge from the London 1908 Olympics. Silvered bronze, 10 gm, 32 mm in diameter. The badge depicts the head of Athena facing a laurel branch and encircled by a blue enameled border with the text, "Olympic Games London 1908, Competitor." The reverse bears a Vaughton of Birmingham maker's mark and is stamped "130" and “WG," which stands for 'Winter Games.' Interestingly, several events at the 1908 London Summer Games were classified as ‘winter’ and took place in October; this included the first figure skating contest in an Olympic Games. The competitor badges for the 'Winter Games' of the London 1908 Olympics are extremely rare.
