ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 9.75, September 7, 1834. Handwritten letter to Col. Samuel H. Laughlin in Nashville, Tennessee, in part: "I did not receive your letter of the 4th until last night. With it I received the Republican containing the article to which you allude. Your letter of yesterday reached me this morning. For your kind suggestions I thank you most sincerely. It had been intimated to me some days ago, and from a source in which I placed confidence that I was to me attacked through the press here, and if it shall hereafter become necessary, the fact that such a threat was made from a source higher than the Editor of the Republican, can I expect be established. The article in the Republican has I have no doubt been prepared…with a view to divert the public attention from the real grounds of controversy between the two Editors. I think with you that the article in the Republican is an 'unwarrantable attack'—'and made not in pursuance of the original grounds of the controversy.'"
He continues to outline his plan to respond to the unspecified controversy, and closes: "I would await you at Nashville as you request, but am informed that the President will set out for Washington on tomorrow. I should like to see you. The Court comes here tomorrow and I will be detained until the last of the week. If you think it is important to see me, write me." He adds a postscript at the conclusion, initialed "J.K.P.," in full: "Any thing you may write will be regarded as confidential." Addressed on the reverse in Polk's own hand. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light stains, and some minor seal-related paper loss at the hinge.
