American attorney, jurist, and Democratic politician (1789–1851) who served as Secretary of the Navy under President Jackson, Secretary of the Treasury under Jackson and Van Buren, and as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1845 until his death. Two handwritten letters by Woodbury, both to Francess Anne Woodbury: an ALS signed "L. W.," one page, 8 x 10, postmarked August 9, [no year], in part: "I enclose you a caricature of the President thinking about his veto of the Bank bill as the Irishman said about his owl he didn't talk much, but he evidently keeps up a tremendous thinking," addressed on the reverse in Woodbury's hand and franked, "Free, Levi Woodbury"; and an ALS signed "L. W.," three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 9.75, November 5, 1847, in part: "I am sorry your mother is detained so much…If I come down tomorrow, it will be with a view to return back home by Wednesday or Thursday…I really pity your mother, but am not aware, that anything further can be properly said & done on the subject; and matters must be left to take their course," also addressed on the reverse in Woodbury's hand. In very good to fine condition, with seal-related tears to the shorter letter.
