Handwritten letter regarding William Lloyd Garrison's abolitionist work, in full: "Mr. Mill presents his compliments to Mr. Ryley and incloses a cheque for £5 to the Garrison Testimonial." Includes the original mailing envelope addressed in Mill's hand, as well as a handwritten pass by William Lloyd Garrison, in full: "Admit the Bearer to Mr. Thompson's Lecture. Wm. Lloyd Garrison." Affixed to slightly larger sheets and in very fine condition.
In 1866, a committee was established to raise $50,000 as a public tribute to William Lloyd Garrison, who had long toiled to abolish slavery in the United States. They outlined their goal: 'We, the undersigned, do therefore invite all people who rejoice in the destruction of Slavery, in the re-establishment of the Union on the basis of Universal Freedom, who appreciate his past service in the cause of Liberty, and the dignity and judgment with which he has accepted and interpreted the more recent events of public history, to unite with us in presenting a national testimonial, of not less than Fifty Thousand Dollars, to our fellow countryman.'
