Revolutionary War general, first United States Secretary of War, and founder of the military school that became West Point (1750–1806). ALS signed “H. Knox,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 10, November 30, 1796. Handwritten letter to a friend, commenting on plans to sail and some financial matters. In part: "I received your letter of the 18th by Robinson and also the sails and rigging for the brig. We shall in three or four days follow this letter, having taken our passage in a new schooner commanded by a Capt. Crouch, and which belongs to Capt. Reed…I have been compelled to draw upon you money orders, none at sight but those, or so much, as was unavoidable…I value my sacrifice essential to the payment of these orders—my credit and prosperity in this country depends upon it." In fine condition, with the rear panel partially inlaid into a slightly larger sheet. Accompanied by a handsome engraved portrait.
Knox had retired to Thomaston, Maine, in 1795, where he oversaw the rise of a business empire—with interests in cattle raising, ship building, and construction material—built on borrowed money. Resulting financial problems forced Knox to sell large tracts of his Maine lands, and he died in 1806 leaving an estate that was bankrupt.
