American artist (1928–2018) associated with the pop art movement, known for his iconic "LOVE" design. ALS signed “R. Indiana,” one page, 5.75 x 7.75, blindstamped personal letterhead, February 19, 1974. Handwritten letter to painter Merv Slotnick, in full: "I think it more appropriate if I signed my own. You may have some difficulty with those other guys…P.S. Your choice of stamps is awful." In fine condition. Accompanied by a letter from Slotnick, noting that he had contacted several artists and museum officials about speaking at an annual art teachers' conference; also includes an FDC featuring Indiana's "LOVE" stamp and a metallic cachet, signed in black felt tip by Slotnick, "Indiana loved Maine, RIP Robert, Merv Slotnick. Indiana's jab at the stamp used in the initial correspondence seems to be a reference to the widely distributed "LOVE" stamp issued by the USPS a year earlier in 1973.
