Original vintage glossy 9.25 x 7 AP wirephoto of the young Joseph Stalin taken in 1910, along with a portrait of his mother, published by the Associated Press in 1953 on news that the Soviet leader had suffered a paralytic stroke and was in a coma. Reverse bears an "Associated Press Newsphoto" credit stamp and retains its affixed caption: "She Raised Her Son To Be A Priest: Caption material supplied by Sovfoto, distribution agency in the U.S. for official Soviet photos, identifies these pictures as Joseph Stalin, in 1910, and his mother, Katherina Djugashivili, who sought to educate her son for the priesthood. She died in Tiflis in 1937. The Soviet dictator, whose revolutionary career brought him to one of the world's most powerful posts, is reported close to death in Moscow, March 5th." In very good to fine condition, with creasing to the corners and margins, a small tear to the right edge, and a tear to the caption.
