American playwright and novelist (1913-1973) who had a string of memorable Broadway productions in the early 1950s, including Picnic, which earned him a Pulitzer Prize. With his portraits of small-town life and settings rooted in the American heartland, Inge became known as the ‘Playwright of the Midwest.’ TLS signed “Bill,” one page, 6 x 7.75, personal letterhead, March 27, 1960. Letter to legendary director George Cukor, in full: “‘Heller in Pink Tights’ is the most refreshing, delightful movie I have seen in a very long time. Of course, I felt a little sad that Steve Forest didn't get the girl, but I made my peace. Congratulations on a really fine job.” Inge types at the end: “And how are you?” In fine condition.
