Description

Rare Mercury Records publicity photo signed by the Big Bopper for a pioneering rock 'n' roll DJ

Early rock 'n' roller and disc jockey (1930–1959) known for his songs 'Chantilly Lace,' 'Running Bear,' and 'White Lightning,' who was tragically killed along with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens in a plane crash on February 3, 1959—famously known as 'The Day the Music Died.' Incredibly rare vintage glossy 7.5 x 9.5 Mercury Records promo photo, signed and inscribed in fountain pen to radio personality George 'Hound Dog' Lorenz, "Hello Baby! To my buddy—Hound Dog, Thanks for Everything, The Big Bopper.” Nicely matted and framed with a descriptive caption to an overall size of 14.5 x 19.25. In very good to fine condition, with surface impressions and several creases touching his face, visible at an angle. The Big Bopper's autograph is extremely scarce and sought after in any form, this being just the second signed photograph we've offered in the last decade.

As a radio emcee/personality, George Lorenz, known fondly as 'Hound Dog,' was recognized by his many listeners as one of the most renowned showmen in the music industry. With his vision and passion for music, he pioneered the birth of rock 'n' roll and laid claim to what would change American music forever. He launched many of the careers of artists and musical groups, maintaining ongoing friendships with them. The 'Hound Dog' did many shows along the east coast with The Big Bopper, as well as with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. Devastated by their deaths, George recalled the last time they spoke: he told The Big Bopper, 'When you finish this leg of your tour, let's do another show in Buffalo.' Bopper sent an autographed picture to George but, sadly, there would be no more shows. George remembered: 'The Big Bopper was a great radio personality, artist, and a down to earth, wonderful guy.'
