“To avoid collision, ‘Hard-a-Port,’ PT109 sunk by accident"—the Amagiri captain draws a map of the Solomon Islands and his collision with Kennedy's patrol torpedo boat

Japanese naval officer who commanded the 11th Flotilla (1900-1986) and who was Senior Officer on board the destroyer Amagiri on the night of the collision with John F. Kennedy's PT-109. Attractive black-bordered FDC with a cachet honoring the life of President John F. Kennedy as a 'Fighter for World Peace,' postmarked in Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1967, signed in black ink, "Capt. Katsumori Yamashiro, Comdr.," who adds a detailed map from “Aug. 2, 1843,” which charts the incident within the waterways of the Solomon Islands, noting “Kolombangara Island,” the “Kula Gulf,” the “Vella Gulf,” and the point of impact between Kennedy’s PT-109 and the Japanese destroyer Amagiri, with Yamashiro adding, “To avoid collision, ‘Hard-a-Port,’ PT109 sunk by accident.” In very fine condition.
