Description

“Congratulations on your wedding day, Eric Clapton B.A."—early signature from the guitar legend as a student at the Hollyfield School in Surbiton

Signed book: The Bible: Authorized Version, edited by John Stirling with drawings by Horace Knowles. Later printing. London: The British & Foreign Bible Society, 1959. Hardcover, 5.5 x 7.75, 256 pages. Signed on the reverse of the last free end page in black ink, “Congratulations on your wedding day, Eric Clapton B.A.” The page also bears several other inscriptions from Clapton’s classmates at the Hollyfield School in Surbiton, with each mentioning different celebratory events. A Hollyfield School bookplate affixed to the front pastedown indicates that this book belonged to art student Ian Symes in July 1960. In fine condition, with some light staining to the covers. In 1961, after leaving Hollyfield School in Surbiton, Clapton studied at the Kingston College of Art but was expelled at the end of the academic year because his focus had remained on music rather than art. Two years later he joined The Yardbirds.
