Description

Two items signed by Madame Chiang Kai-Shek:

Rare first edition book of Paintings by Madame Chiang Kai-Shek: Volume I. Taipei, Taiwan: Shih-Ling Studio, 1945. Chinese-sewn cloth wrappers with paper cover label and original folding portfolio with faux bone clasp, 11.5 x 15.5, 32 pages featuring reproductions of her paintings. Signed and inscribed on an opening page in fountain pen, "To Mrs. Grayson Kirk, Mayling Soong Chiang, New York, 1966." Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: VG+/None in a VG case.

TLS signed "With best wishes, Yours cordially, Mayling Soong Chiang," two pages, 6.5 x 8.5, personal letterhead, October 15, 1966, sent to the book's recipient: "Thank you for the beautiful spray of orchids so charmingly arranged. As I dictate this note, I am looking at them, and marveling that they have remained so fresh and lovely for so long. I am sending you a volume of my paintings which I hope you will enjoy having for your library. On my next visit I shall try to accept your kind suggestion to hold an exhibition in Columbia University. Meanwhile it will be fun just thinking of the possibility.” In fine condition. Accompanied by original mailing envelope. Grayson Kirk (1903-1997) was a political scientist who served as president of Columbia University between 1953 and 1968.
