Description

"Sometimes you browbeat your associates, but they always loved you for it"

TLS signed “Henry,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, March 4, 1983. Letter to Philip Habib of The World Affairs Council of Northern California, in full: “The American people owe you a debt of gratitude for what you have accomplished for the cause of peace—not only in the Middle East in the last two years, but in a lifetime of devoted service as a diplomat, public official, and distinguished representative of your country. It cannot be an accident that every President and every Secretary of State in the last 15 years has learned to rely on you for the brilliant performance of the most difficult and challenging assignments. You carried out your assignments not only with great professional distinction, but with extraordinary human warmth. Sometimes you browbeat your associates, but they always loved you for it. I am proud to have been a colleague, and to join in this tribute.” In fine condition. Accompanied by a photo of Kissinger shaking hands with Habib.

Philip C. Habib was an American career diplomat (1920–1992) who served as a Foreign Service Officer for over 30 years, which included working to prevent the escalation of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. He worked as Ronald Reagan's special envoy to the Middle East from 1981 to 1983, when he negotiated numerous cease-fire agreements between the various parties involved in the Lebanese Civil War. Habib was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1982—the highest official honor given to a U.S. citizen by the U.S. government.
