Description

The former first lady pitches her son for the presidency: "As President, George W. will restore dignity to the White House"

Form letter featuring the printed facsimile signature of Barbara Bush, promoting her son's candidacy for the Republican nomination for the presidency, one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, January 21, 2000, signed at the top in black felt tip, "Best wishes, George W. Bush." In the letter, Barbara explains "why George W. Bush should be without a doubt our next President." In part: "George W. has been a very successful governor of a big state; in fact, if Texas were a country, it would have the 11th largest economy in the world. He's done exactly what he said he would do when he ran for office…Signed the two largest tax cuts in Texas history totaling nearly $3 billion. Made education his No. 1 priority, including setting the very ambitious goal of teaching every child to read at grade level by the third grade. He raised teacher salaries, gave more control back to local districts, and ended automatic social promotions…Reduced the welfare rolls, reformed the juvenile justice system, and put into place tort reform. And he did all of this with both houses of the state legislature controlled by the Democrats!

It's not just his mother who believes he's been a great governor. The people of Texas think so, too. He was re-elected to a second term with 69 percent of the vote. His enormous landslide victory helped get the entire slate of Republicans elected—the first time that has happened in Texas history. He's proud to be a compassionate conservative, and yes, it's possible to be both. He's bringing women, young people, and minorities into our party in record numbers, because they like and trust what they hear from him. As President, George W. will restore dignity to the White House. He'll serve with honor; surround himself with good people; set clear goals and then work hard to meet them. He'll help Washington return to a climate of mutual respect, instead of personal destruction. Above all else, he'll keep his word. George W. is a uniter, not a divider. He'll work with Congress to do what's best for the country; not for his political gain." In fine condition, with light handling wear and intersecting folds.
