Description

British Major General (1742-1817) who commanded the relief column that saved the retreating British forces at the Battle of Lexington and Concord by skillfully using limited artillery rounds to prevent a failed expedition from becoming a major defeat. Third-person handwritten letter by Hugh Percy, one page, 7.25 x 8.75, December 2, 1799. In full: "The Duke of Northumberland presents his compliments to Mr. Twining, I shall be very glad to see him on Wednesday next at three o’clock. North House." The consignor notes that this letter was directed to Richard Twining (1749-1824), director of the East India Company and the head of Twinings in the Strand, London. In fine condition, with show-through at the corners from old mounting remnants on the reverse.
