Dutch painter (1831–1915) who was one of the most significant marine and beach painters of his time ALS signed “H. W. Mesdag,” one page both sides, 4.25 x 5.5, July 9, 1900. Addressed from “The Hague,” a handwritten letter in broken English from Mesdag to B. W. Woodward, who purchased a photograph of one of Mesdag’s more important paintings through a Paris dealer. In full: “Today I returned the photograph signed of the picture Morning at Scheveningen you have bought of Mr. Kurtz. In the same time I sent you my portrait. About the picture which is one of my most important and very successful works, I can write not much. It is a fine morning at Scheveningen when the boats come in and the fish is sold on the beach to the people of Scheveningen who come with their baskets. The sand is united with the sea and it is in a very fine day light. I hope this painting may remember you Holland and give you a number of years much pleasure.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope hand-addressed by Mesdag, who incorporates his signatures in the lower left, “from H. W. Mesdag, the Hague.”
