Description

"Here’s the big news – sudden and unexpected – I’ve decided to marry Hoki and take her to Europe with me"

ALS signed “Henry,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, no date [circa August-September 1967]. Handwritten letter to his Japanese translator and teacher, Michiyo Watanabe, in full: “I won’t be home until 5 or 5:30 this evening. Hope you’re having dinner with us. No more lessons! Here’s the big news – sudden and unexpected – I’ve decided to marry Hoki and take her to Europe with me. This means, of course, that you are affected too. I will definitely need your room upstairs and the one next to it. But there’s no hurry. You can stay until I return from Europe – end of October or early November. I am very very sorry I couldn’t tell you earlier and save you trouble of moving twice. But it was a sudden decision. Talking to Riko Mizuno about the situation she said she might be able to fix up an extra room for you at her place. We’ll talk about it all when I see you. Forgive me!” Miller adds a postscript along the left edge: “Guess you might as well leave piano standing in hallway, eh?” In fine condition, with a trivial stain to the lower right corner. Miller married Hoki Tokuda on September 10, 1967, in Beverly Hills, and the couple traveled to Paris for their honeymoon later that month.
