"Our country was settled during a superstitious & fanatical age, but many of our Founders were neither superstitious nor fanatical"

American politician (1760–1833) who succeeded Alexander Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury under Washington and Adams, and went on to serve as governor of Connecticut. ALS signed "Oliv: Wolcott," one page, 8 x 9.75, June 18, 1818. Handwritten letter to politician and writer Gulian C. Verplanck, in part: "You have in my opinion treated this very important subject in a manner exactly proper & have given a lead which will be followed by others. Our country was settled during a superstitious & fanatical age, but many of our Founders were neither superstitious nor fanatical. It is important to maintain the distinction between the Independents & Brownists." In very good to fine condition, with some small tears and fold splits.
