Description

"This Kashmir affair is not likely to be settled soon"

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 9.25, August 6, 1946. Letter to Norman D. Cliff in London, in part: "I am sorry I missed seeing you before you left India. But as you are coming back here again we are likely to meet. I went to Kashmir again and spent a few days there. Nothing very new has happened there and the trials of both Sheikh Abdullah and Kachru are going on. I am afraid that this Kashmir affair is not likely to be settled soon. Behind it, of course, lie not only the Political Department but also the Chamber of Princes. As you probably know, the Political Department of the Government of India was exceedingly annoyed with my visit to Faridkot." In very good condition, with creasing, scattered staining, and a small repair to the center of the intersecting folds. Accompanied by an unsigned photograph of Nehru. In May 1946, Sheikh Abdullah launched the 'Quit Kashmir' agitation against Maharajah Hari Singh and was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison; he was released only sixteen months later on September 29, 1947.
