Description

Signed book: The Discovery of India. Later printing. Calcutta: Signet Press, 1948. Hardcover, 6.5 x 9.5, 497 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in fountain pen, "To Stephen Spender, Jawaharlal Nehru, March 1951, New Delhi." Also signed below with his ownership signature in fountain pen, "Stephen Spender." Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: G/None, with a cracked front hinge, worn corners, and some losses to the spine cloth.

A noted English poet and essayist, Stephen Spender (1909–1995) visited India in the early 1950s, where he was deeply impressed by the country's rich cultural heritage and complex social fabric. During his visit, he engaged with Indian poets and intellectuals, exploring themes of colonialism and post-independence identity. His experiences in India influenced his perspective on literature and global political dynamics.
