Description

“Forgive me in consideration of my very delicate health. As perhaps I may not see you again, I wish you every possible prosperity”—twice-signed letter from Beethoven with a three-bar musical quotation inspired by ‘Opferlied’ (Song of Sacrifice), penned days before departing for the healing mineral baths of Baden in the spring of 1825

Remarkable autograph letter signed twice by Beethoven, written in German on May 3, 1825, just two days before his departure from Vienna to recuperate in Baden. This two-page letter, measuring 8.5 x 10.25 inches, is addressed to music critic Ludwig Rellstab, whose name Beethoven mistakenly spells as “Nellsatb” on the integral address panel. In the letter, Beethoven apologizes for missing Rellstab’s visit, explaining that he had been occupied with preparations for his trip. He expresses well-wishes, writing (translated), “As I was just about to leave for the countryside yesterday, I had to make arrangements, and unfortunately, your visit was in vain. Please forgive me, considering my fragile health. If we do not meet again, I wish you all the best. Think of me when composing your poems.”

Adding a personal touch, Beethoven includes a postscript stating, “Though recovering, I still feel very weak. Please accept this as a small token of remembrance,” followed by a handwritten musical quotation—three bars inspired by Friedrich von Matthisson’s Opferlied (Song of Sacrifice). Beneath the notation, he inscribes the lyrics: “Das Schöne zu dem Guten!” (“The beautiful together with the good!”).

The letter remains in very good to fine condition, with areas of light toning and minor paper loss from its original wax seal. A rare and deeply personal artifact from Beethoven’s later years.
