Description

American pilot (1928-1958) who served as a test pilot after the Korean War, participating in the Bell X-2 program, in which he set an altitude record of 126,200 feet in 1956. For this suborbital flight above most of the atmosphere, he became known as ‘The First Spaceman.’ He was selected for the Air Force's program to put a man in space but was killed in a plane crash in 1958. Immunization Certificate booklet issued to U. S. Air Force test pilot Iven Carl Kincheloe, Jr. by the United States of America Department of Defense, 3.75 x 5, four pages, signed on the first page in blue ballpoint, “Iven C. Kincheloe Jr.,” which also features typed personal information like blood type, service number, department, birthdate, race, and gender. Annotations to the inner pages and back page affirm that Kincheloe has been vaccinated for smallpox, typhoid, tetanus, typhus, and polio in March and April 1957. In fine condition. Kincheloe remains rare across all signed formats, with this official vaccine card all the more desirable given that it was signed around the time he was selected as one of the first three pilots in the next rocket-powered aircraft program, the X-15.
