Founder and editor of the New York Tribune (1811-1872) who used the power of his newspaper to advocate for a variety of liberal causes, most importantly the call for emancipation of slaves during the Civil War. Civil War-dated ALS, one page, 4.75 x 7.75, Office of The Tribune letterhead, December 22, 1864. Handwritten letter to O. D. Case, in full: “Mr. Vail is nearly correct in the letter he sent you, and which I herewith return. I therefore conclude that this would be the best way to straighten out the business. Send him a box of 12 books (plain leather) and charge them to me. Advise him that you have done so, and that he is to pay over the proceeds to me. Thus you will have clean books and we shall have made an opening in South Carolina.” Matted and framed with a typed transcription to an overall size of 10 x 17. In fine condition, with some old light stains.
