Important financier (1734-1806) who signed the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, and Constitution. Boldly penned ALS signed “Rob't Morris,” one page, 7 x 9.5, November 13, 1792. Addressed from Philadelphia, a handwritten letter to Robert Gilmor and Company, in full: “I have rec’d by the Sept’r Packet a letter of the 1st of that month from Messrs Wilhem & Ian Willink in which they advise of a purchase they had made of my son from which they reserve £4000 against the balance of my a/c with them. This renders it unnecessary for me to remit them as I was going to do by a ship on the point of departure for Amsterdam, and it will also save you the trouble of any further interference as they and I shall finally adjust & close that acc’t. With thanks for your politeness in the course of this business.” Double-matted and framed with an engraved portrait to an overall size of 20 x 16; window to reverse of frame backing reveals the address panel, which is franked by Morris, “Free, R. Morris.” In fine condition, with scattered foxing.
Willem Willink (sometimes Wilhelm, Wilheim, or Wilhem) (1750 – 1841) was a wealthy Amsterdam merchant and one of the investors in the Holland Land Company and the Louisiana Purchase. The group of investors in the Holland Land Company purchased American assets from Robert Morris that were bundled as negotiaties (a sort of market fund) and marketed in the Netherlands. These assets included the large tract of land in western New York plus tracts in central New York, western and northern Pennsylvania.
