Description

Partly-printed DS, signed “Victoria R,” one page, 15.25 x 11.25, January 30, 1885. Queen Victoria appoints Sydney Turing Barlow Lawford "to be an Officer in Our Land Forces from the Seventh day of February 1885." Nicely signed at the head by Queen Victoria. The blue paper seal affixed below remains intact with one edge chip. Matted and framed to an overall size of 21.75 x 17.75. In fine condition, with light toning and faint staining.

Sydney Turing Barlow Lawford (1865–1953) received a commission into the British Army as a lieutenant in the 7th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) on February 7, 1885, and was promoted to captain on September 3, 1894. He would command troops in the Second Boer War and on the Western front during World War I. His son, the actor and 'Rat Pack' member Peter Lawford, was born in 1923.
