TLS signed “Ray,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, January 3, 1948. Letter to “Swanie,” his literary agent H. N. Swanson, in full: “Something I forgot to mention in my last letter to you: David Tyler gave me a bunch of carbon copies of letters Eddie had had to write in connection with small literary matters, mostly dating back to a time before I quit Sanders. Attention to this stuff involves a lot of work which is not at all in your line and for which you are probably not equipped, except to make it an additional burden on those who already have enough to do. When we wrote (I forget whether it was David or myself) that it seemed now proper for you to take over the detail work connected with my writing for publication, I had in mind the possibility that David would be leaving me at the end of the year to take a consular job. Since he is not leaving me and since he, operating for an individual, is much more up on this stuff than you could possibly be—so much so in fact that from time to time he has to prompt you—I suggest that we leave these matters to him, in all cases where you have no interest other than your natural desire to take care of my troubles. If any monies come in directly to me I will account for the commission thereon to whosoever may be entitled to it. I expect to be at Universal on Tuesday morning since the court case has been put off calendar for the time being on account of the sickness of the presiding judge.” In fine condition.
