Desirable signed book: Show Boat. Limited first edition, numbered 1/201. NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1926. Hardcover with green paper-covered boards and vellum quarter binding, with matching slipcase and paper label to spine, 6.25 x 9, 398 pages. Signed nicely on the colophon in blue ink by Edna Ferber. Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: VG/None in a G slipcase, with crude repairs to splits in the case.
The play for Show Boat, adapted from Ferber's novel, won the Pulitzer Prize and was subsequently adapted for the movie screen on three occasions. The first version was made by Universal Studios in 1929 and shot as a silent picture with a sound prologue featuring the Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II score. The mismatch failed miserably but the studio believed in the material and remade it brilliantly in 1936, taking a chance with noted horror director James Whale. It was remade again in 1951 by George Sidney with a significantly different script featuring Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner, Howard Keel, and Joe E. Brown.
