Description

"I think the campaign is going along all right but nobody knows what will happen at the end of an election in these days"

TLS, one page, 7.5 x 10.5, The Commonwealth of Massachusetts (Office of the Lieutenant Governor) letterhead, October 26, 1918. Letter to Frank O. Hardy, in full: “Your very kind favor of October 23rd is received. I had learned from your friends in Fitchburg and your brother about your illness with very great regret. I think the campaign is going along all right but nobody knows what will happen at the end of an election in these days. It is a great source of satisfaction to me to have the friendship and confidence of men of sound judgment like yourself, whether it comes to my lot to be chosen Governor of Massachusetts or not. I sincerely trust you are as comfortable as possible and that you may soon regain your health and be with us again.” In fine condition.

Coolidge was unopposed for the Republican nomination for Governor of Massachusetts in 1918. He and his running mate, Channing Cox, a Boston lawyer and Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, ran on the previous administration's record: fiscal conservatism, a vague opposition to Prohibition, support for women's suffrage, and support for American involvement in World War I. Coolidge was elected by a margin of 16,773 votes over his opponent, Richard H. Long, in the smallest margin of victory of any of his statewide campaigns.
