Description

Autograph endorsements signed by William Ellery, “Wm. Ellery…Coll’r,” and Jedediah Huntington, “J. Huntington, Collector,” at the bottom of a partly printed customs house document, one page, 13.25 x 8, April 4 and 7, 1795. Ellery’s endorsement, issued from the “Custom House, Port of Newport,” reads: “I certify that Oliver Simons master of the Sloop Industry has permission to land here, Eight casks of Nails, six casks of spikes, two tons of hollow ware.” Huntington’s endorsement, issued from the “District port of New London,” reads: “Permission is granted to land Ten Casks Nails Three ton hollow ware, Eight doz shovels, twelve dozen Bonnet papers.” The manifest on the reverse is signed by Ellery. In very good condition, with irregular toning, and archival tape repair to complete separation along the central vertical fold.
