Illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin (1730–1813) who served as the last colonial governor of New Jersey; unlike his father, he remained a steadfast Loyalist throughout the Revolutionary War. Manuscript DS, signed “Wm. Franklin,” one page, 8.25 x 6.5, November 28, 1763. As governor of New Jersey, Franklin orders payment to "the Hon'ble Charles Read Esq'r or his order the sum of Twenty five Pounds…being for half a year's salary as one of the Justices of the Supreme Court." Nicely signed at the conclusion by Governor William Franklin, and further endorsed by Charles Read. In very good to fine condition, with light staining and soiling, and an old mounting strip along the left edge.
