Description

Brother of American Express co-founder William Fargo, J. C. Fargo (1829-1915) served as a president of American Express for 30 years and pioneered the development of traveler's cheques. Partly-printed DS, signed "Jas. C. Fargo," one page, 10.75 x 7.75, September 5, 1876. Stock certificate for 100 shares in the Merchants Despatch Transportation Company issued to R. M. Shoemaker of Cincinnati, Ohio, signed below in ink by James C. Fargo as the company's president, and countersigned by its treasurer and secretary. The original receipt remains affixed to the left edge. In fine condition. R. M. Shoemaker served as the chief engineer of the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railroad.
