Scarce Civil War-dated printed order for "General Orders, No. 3," issued by the Adjutant and Inspector General’s Office at Richmond, Virginia, one page, 5 x 6.75, February 6, 1865. The order, “published for the information of the army,” contains an Act of Congress designed “to provide for the appointment of a General in Chief of the Armies Confederate States.” The second section reads, in part: “General ROBERT E. LEE having been duly appointed General in Chief of the Armies of the Confederate States, will assume the duties thereof, and will be obeyed and respected accordingly.” The upper portion bears a “Rebel Archives” stamp from the “Record Division, War Department.” In fine condition, with a stain to the right edge.
