Civil War-dated ALS from Union soldier Sgt. William A. Thompson, signed “Albert,” one page both sides, 8 x 12.25, September 30, 1864. Handwritten letter to his mother while stationed with General William Tecumseh Sherman’s army in Georgia, in part: “I will write a few lines to you concerning the Presidential Election and its effect on the Soldiers in this Army. We take as much interest in it as the people up north…The Soldiers are nearly divided on the two candidates. In our company there is a majority for the Democratic Candidate, George B. McClellan, and we have pretty warm times at the supper table discussing the good and bad of each party. By the Muster Rolls I am old enough to vote and will put one in for ‘Old Abe,’ the Republican candidate…to stop this war the only peace us soldiers want is a peace brought with the bayonet and bullet and that will be an everlasting one…You must not think that because our company is for Little Mac that that is the Voice of the Army it is not.” In fine condition, with one light stain.
