Seddon issues a "passport through the lines to the United States," with requisite “parole of honor not to reveal anything prejudicial to the Confederate cause”

Former Democratic congressman (1815–1880) who served as Confederate Secretary of War. Civil War-dated LS, one page, 9 x 7.75, Confederate States of America (War Department) letterhead, April 9, 1864. Handwritten letter to General Winder, in full: “Give Mr. Ludwig Schulz a passport through the lines to the United States, taking his parole of honor not to reveal anything prejudicial to the Confederate cause.” In fine condition, with light show-through along the bottom edge from old mounting remnants on the back.
