Description

The Rolling Stones make their Australian debut with Roy Orbison during their Far East Tour of 1965

Fascinating collection of Rolling Stones and Roy Orbison material obtained by Bob Jones, a member of the Australian rock group Chris Hall and The Torquays, who supported the Rolling Stones on their 1965 tour of Australia. The collection is highlighted by vintage blue ballpoint signatures of the Rolling Stones — “Brian Jones,” “the Rolling Stones, Keith Richard,” “Mick Jagger,” “Bill Wyman,” and “Love, Charlie Boy” — and a red ballpoint signature of Roy Orbison, who writes the inscription, “To Bob, from Roy Orbison,” on an off-white 4.25 x 7.75 cardstock sheet.

The collection includes two clipped newspaper advertisements for concerts by the Rolling Stones and Roy Orbison, which took place in Sydney and Melbourne in 1965; an artist directions sheet for the Sydney show on January 27, 1965; two ‘Complimentary’ ticket stubs for the Rolling Stones show at Manufacturers Auditorium in Sydney on January 22, 1965 (the band’s first-ever performance in Australia); and Jones’s ‘Stage Door Pass’ for the ‘Big Beat Show Of 65,” which admits “Robert Jones.” The above supplementary items are all affixed to a 9.5 x 9.5 cardstock sheet. Also included are three original glossy photos, 3.5 x 3.5, two of which are laminated and contain images of Jagger and Jones, and a rare 9 x 4 mailing envelope promoting the Rolling Stones and Roy Orbison on “Harry M. Millers Big Beat Show of ‘65,” with text to left side: “They’re Coming! The Rolling Stones, Roy Orbison.” In fine condition, with old mounting remnants on the back of signed sheet.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks, two modern glossy prints of the Jagger and Jones photos, and a letter of provenance from Jones, which reads: “I was the guitarist in the band The Torquays. We opened for The Rolling Stones & Roy Orbison Australian tour in 1965. We did 7 shows with them, 2 on the 22nd January, 3 on the 23rd January, and 2 on the 27th January. During the performances of each act, we got to hang around out back and chat with them. It was during this time that I was lucky enough to get their autographs and photos. I am the person in the photos with Brian Jones and Mick Jagger, they were all very friendly and easy to talk to.”
