Union officer (1837-1863) who commanded the all-black 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and was killed in action during his regiment's famous charge on Fort Wagner; Shaw's efforts were dramatized in the 1989 Oscar-winning film Glory. Exceedingly rare, choice 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Robert Gould Shaw in uniform, published by Whipple of Boston, neatly signed on the mount in ink, "Robt. G. Shaw." In very fine condition. An incredibly scarce and important Civil War autograph, and easily the finest signed photograph of Shaw we have ever seen.
