Description

Union general (1817–1873) who was assassinated by Chief Kintpuash during peace talks with the Modoc tribe of Northern Carolina during the Indian Wars, making him the only US general casualty during that period. LS, signed “Ed. R. S. Canby,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, April 5, 1867. Letter attesting to the skill and integrity of General George L. Andrews, in part: "General George L. Andrews of Massachusetts served with great distinction throughout the war for the suppression of the rebellion and was discharged at its close as a Brigadier General of Volunteers with the brevet of Major General. For nearly ten years his service was in my command in the south west and for a part of this time he was intimately associated with me as the Provost Marshal General of the Army in the field and afterwards as Chief of Staff in the Department of the Gulf. In the former capacity he served during the campaign against Mobile and until after the surrender of the Rebel armies under Taylor and Kirby Smith, and in the latter until his discharge by reason of the termination of hostilities and the consequent reduction of the Volunteer forces. Genl. Andrews was first selected by me without previous personal acquaintance on account of his established reputation for professional and personal integrity and high grade of qualifications." In fine condition.
