Description

Confederate major general (1836-1906), known as 'Fightin' Joe,' who led his troops in vigorous opposition to Sherman during the Atlanta campaign. TLS signed “Jos. Wheeler,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, Headquarters U.S. Forces (Camp Wikoff, Montauk Point, Long Island) letterhead, September 20, 1898. Letter to his cousin, Ella Wingate Ireland, in full: “I was so sorry I did not see you Sunday. I had so much to do in important matters, preparatory to the movement of troops, that I was constantly occupied. I hope to have the pleasure of seeing you soon, and would love very much if cousin Isaac McClellan could come over with you. I have a great affection for my relatives, but have been so situated that I have not seen as much of them as I desired. Of very late years I have had the pleasure of meeting the McKessons and Clarkes. One of my regiments, the 3d Cavalry, is packing up and will leave to-morrow. It will go in boats to New London, and hence to Post Ethan Allen, up in Vermont. This regiment was one in which I served before the war in 1859-60 and 61. It is singular, but at that time I served in two different Cavalry companies; one Company ‘A’ of the 1st Cavalry, and the other Company ‘A’ of the 3d Cavalry. Both of them have been with me in this campaign. Please give my love to Cousin Isaac McClellan and all my other cousin.” In fine condition, with light show-through at the corners from small mounting remnants on the back.
